China, 1926. Jake Greenberg, an American expatriate and owner of a fashionable casino in Shanghai, arrives in Manchouli, a dusty little city straddling the Chinese-Russian border. Posing as a wine salesman and using a false passport supplied by British Intelligence, his mission is to smuggle two Russian anti-communists into Shanghai. They have a secret that the communists can't allow the world to know. But as soon as Jake crosses into Russia he senses something is very wrong. He is being watched. Soon the secret police are at his door and Jake and the Russians are on the run.

I just love this series. It is not only entertaining but it is about two things that I am very interested in. That is China in the 1920s and how the world coped with the Bolsheviks. I always enjoy the characters since they are well-drawn and interesting. Jake Greenberg seems to change with each book in the series as he grows older.I really think that the books grasp the essential feel of how Shanghai would have been in the 1920s. So I would say that this book is well worth the reading.

Just finished the book. Unfortunately, I have finished the series. I love these books. Howard Turk is a very fine author, and his knowledge of China is extensive, as is his knowledge of the period, the 1920s and 30s. I really like the characters, and I hope to read more in this series soon.
